Recruitment Process
After the application deadline, the Human Resources Division will review the materials submitted by all applicants. Each application is carefully reviewed based upon the requirements of the position. Please be patient, the volume of applications we receive is generally large, and the screening process may take up to several weeks. Each recruitment’s selection process consists of various “tests” designed to assist us in predicting your successful job performance for the specific position being recruited; therefore, each selection process may be different depending on the type of job for which you are applying. Usually, our testing process will consist of one or more of the following:
- Written Test
Written tests are designed to test general aptitude or specific knowledge of the technical aspects of the job for which you are applying. You may wish to thoroughly review the job flier to familiarize yourself with the areas which may be tested. You will need to successfully pass the written examination in order to be invited to the oral interviews. Casual and comfortable attire is appropriate. - Oral Interviews
Those applicants who are successful in passing the written test and/or screening process(es) will be invited to an oral interview. Oral interviews are typically conducted by an oral panel, made up of three panelists, of qualified subject matter experts who evaluate a person’s knowledge, skills and education, and other qualifying factors as it relates to the position being sought. Questions are designed to evaluate your qualifications as much as possible in the short amount of time available. Please dress in professional attire which is appropriate for the position for which you are applying. We recommend that you research the job thoroughly to determine what knowledge and skills may be evaluated during the interview. Keep in mind that you will be asked to discuss your qualifying background. You may want to prepare by practicing an opening statement regarding your specific education and experience. Try to relax and provide concise but complete responses to the panel’s questions. The interviews last approximately 20 - 45 minutes, depending on the position for which you are applying. - After the Examination
The Human Resources Division will notify you of your examination results of the recruitment within two weeks. If you were successful in passing all parts of the examination, your name will be placed on an eligibility list for the current position. The list is good for two years from the date the Civil Service Commission ratifies the list. The Human Resources Division is often NOT involved in the final selection decision. The City’s objective is obviously to hire the best person for the position. The Human Resources Division recruits, screens, and tests applicants based upon requirements for the position in order to establish the eligibility list. The Department Heads and/or Supervisors in the department where the vacancy actually exists then reviews the eligibility list, evaluate each candidate’s qualification for the particular job and may elect to hold a second interview with some or all of the candidates who are on the eligibility list prior to making a final job offer. - Upon being selected
You must show authorization to work in the United States and pass a medical examination. Civil Service positions serve a probationary period of one year. Once the probationary period has been satisfactorily completed, you receive permanent status.
